This past weekend Unkindness members Belladonna, Dr. Phobias, and Madame Mercy (bio coming soon!) attended the 8th annual TempleCon in Warwick, Rhode Island. The Unkindness had the opportunity to present our four monsters panels (Gothic Monsters, Classic Monsters, Monster Revolution, Bloody Monsters) and Belladonna’s Parlour/The Unkindness Launch Party. During the Gothic Monsters, Dr. Phobias and I were joined by intelligent and talented Samara Martin who lent us her expertise on Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and Gothic literature. It was an absolute pleasure to have her and hear her lovely recitations. I hope she’ll be joining us again soon.
Sitting in the audience of Gothic Monsters was the fantastic James Lurgio (aka Count Orlok) of Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery in Salem, MA. James has a vast wealth of horror knowledge and was able to enrich our discussions through all four panels. I’ll soon be visiting Nightmare Gallery, so we can share with you another wonderful “Dark Destination”.
All four monsters panels were a great success. We saw some familiar faces from last year’s TempleCon (pre Unkindness) and had many repeat attendees throughout the weekend. There must be something we’re doing right! Thanks so much to everyone who attended! We did unfortunately have a couple technical glitches due to our need for a projector (a horror panel is incomplete without terrifying images), but the TempleCon staff was able to resolve them quickly.
Saturday night’s Belladonna’s Parlour/The Unkindness Launch Party was jam-packed with all manner of guests. There were famous doctors, scientists, political and military leaders, pirate crews, and some guests whose nature was beyond my understanding. Unfortunately the apparent slaughter of the poor janitor proved to be too raucous for the “Uppity School Marm” who resided next door. She attempted to shut down the festivities, but after a few drinks she was reveling with the rest of us. Things settled down further when a very talented doctor was able to heal the janitor. A great night for all!
In case you were unaware, Belladonna’s Parlour is an in-character event where anything is possible. It was fantastic fun. I especially enjoyed some of the characters, relationships, and plotlines that were created on the spot just for the occasion. What a fantastic way to launch The Unkindness!
On Saturday I had the great fortune of meeting Vicktor Bariteau, the creator of Ghoulie Manor in Taunton, MA. Vick is a local haunt legend. He was recently featured in The American Scream, a documentary, which follows Vick through the process of creating his home haunt. Vick has since “turned pro” to bring you even more elaborate scares. Ghoulie Manor is another horror destination The Unkindness will soon have the fortune to share with you.
We had such an amazing weekend, the panels and events were well attended and fun, but what really made this weekend special for me were all of the great people I was able to meet and spend time with. I only wish that I were able to attend more panels and events.
Thank you all so much for your support of The Unkindness. Please keep reading to know where to find us at upcoming events and say hi! See all of you ghastly ghouls soon.
